Two girls washed away, two rescued in flash floods in Billawar in J&K’s Kathua district | Jammu News


JAMMU: Two minor girls were washed away and as many rescued including one critical from flash floods that triggered due to heavy rains in Billawar of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday evening.
According to police, four girls were crossing the nullah (rivulet) in Machhadi area while they were returning from school in the evening hours.
“The girl students reached the road junction at around 4pm, and got trapped in flash flood in the rivulet triggered due to heavy rains resulting into the deaths of two while one was rescued and another sustained injuries,” said police.
Police added that the bodies of two girls namely Monika Devi(13), daughter of Anchal Singh and Radha Devi, daughter of Kunj Lal both residents of Dhall, Machaddi were retrieved while one Archana Devi (13) daughter of Raj Kumar also a resident of Dhall machaddi was referred to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Billawar in injured condition and one Monika Devi (15) daughter of Prittam Singh a student of Class 8th was safely rescued and handed over to the family.
“All the four girls were students of Government Kasturba Gandhi School near Nangalla,” police said .
Meanwhile, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh expressing shock over the incident tweeted, “Just now spoken to DC Kathua, Rakesh Minhas after receiving the report about the unfortunate incident of 4 school girls getting caught in flash floods in Billawar area. Sadly two of them lost their life while the third one is being given the required treatment in hospital and the fourth one has been sent home safe.”
Dr Singh further tweeted, “My condolence to the bereaved families. My office is coordinating with the administration for all possible assistance. Meanwhile, parents, in general, are advised not to let their children venture out during inclement weather.”
Earlier on July 10, a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued four more people who got trapped in a flash floods in the River Ravi in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Four persons have been trapped while fishing since Sunday evening in the River Ravi at Maghar near the Paper Mill at Lakhanpur,” he said.
On Sunday (July 9), 59 people were rescued from various flash flood-hit water bodies across the Kathua district.
