On Monday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced new measures aimed at combating the rising threat of financial fraud in the country.

As of May 1, 2023, telecom operators will be required to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to address the growing problem of spam messages and calls, providing significant relief to customers who have been inundated with unwanted communications on a daily basis.

TRAI Wants Telcos to Setup AI to Combat Spam

Starting from May 1st, 2023, Indian telecom companies will be required to implement AI to combat spam calls and messages, as directed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This is expected to provide much-needed relief to customers who are tired of receiving pesky calls and fake messages.

TRAI has been working to stop this growing menace for some time, and the introduction of AI filtering technology is a significant step toward achieving this goal.

The technology will allow telcos to effectively block spam messages and calls, providing a better user experience for customers. P D Vaghela, Chairman of TRAI, has said that the progress of the technology will be reviewed on a fortnightly basis.

As part of the new regulations, TRAI has called for an end to promotional calls made from 10-digit numbers, and for the implementation of a caller ID feature that displays the caller’s number and photo.

However, some telecom companies such as Airtel and Reliance Jio have expressed concerns about privacy issues and the potential cost of implementing the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature. As a result, the AI filter is likely to be the primary tool used to combat spam calls and messages.

It is worth noting that Vodafone-Idea has already completed regulatory sandbox trials, and the feature is expected to be available to all users soon. Airtel is also in the process of setting up an AI feature to control spam messages and is running trials with a global company. Similarly, Reliance Jio is also expected to roll out a new feature in the near future.
