Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday met senior Karnataka politician Jagadish Shettar, who recently joined the grand old party after the BJP refused to give him a ticket to contest in the upcoming Karnataka assembly polls.

“I came to join Congress because everyone knows the ill-treatment given by BJP. So, I have shifted to another national party. Rahul Gandhi is the leader of that party. So, I discussed many things,” ANI quoted Shettar as saying after his meeting with Gandhi.

After associating with the BJP for decades, Shettar recently quit the party as it replaced Mahesh Tenginkai with him in the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency.

He expressed his unhappiness over the BJP treating him “like a kid.” The former Karnataka CM later held National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party BL Santhosh responsible for missing ticket to contest.

“My name was in the list sent by the core committee. I don’t know what happened in the Central Election Committee meeting. If they had offered me some other position earlier respectfully, I would have accepted it. BL Santhosh is the main reason for missing the ticket. For some people, the party is not important but individuals are. To disturb one seat, you destroyed the party,” News9 quoted Shettar as saying.

He joined the Congress party in the presence of leaders such as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge, KPCC President DK Shivakumar, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah among others.

The former CM has been elected from the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency six consecutive times with a margin of at least 20,000 votes. This time around as well, a tough contest is expected between Shettar and the BJP candidate.

Not just Jagadish Shettar, the BJP this time has denied tickets to senior leaders like KS Eshwarappa, Laxman Savadi, S Angara, Raghupathi Bhat and a few others.

The election for the single-phase Karnataka polls will be held on May 10. The results will be announced on May 13.
