JEE Main: While IIT BHU’s international rankings has improved, its domestic rankings have suffered a setback
JEE Main: The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi is a third generation IIT, but it was established in 1919. It has 11 engineering departments, three science departments, three schools and one humanities department.
At the global level, the rankings of IIT BHU have improved as per QS World University Rankings from being the range of 651 to 700 in 2023 to 571 in 2024. As per the QS Asia University Rankings it went up from 281 to 900 range to 261 to 270 range. However, its domestic ranking as per NIRF have gone down across Engineering and Overall categories.

Financial assistance and scholarships
IIT BHU offers merit-cum-means scholarships to 25 per cent undergraduate students, other than that, there are several endowment scholarships as well. The institute also provides other facilities to undergraduate students such as free studentship, scholarship, re-imbursement of mess charges and pocket allowances to those belonging to SC and ST categories.
All the non-sponsored students in MTech and MPharm programmes are provided with financial assistance equivalent to Junior Research Fellowships. The institute also offers a large number of Junior and Senior Research Fellowships to students admitted to PhD programmes. There are international scholarships as well.
IIT BHU was established as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919. The institute completed its 100 years in 2019. In 1968, the engineering colleges of BHU— BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). IIT BHU has been conducting admissions through JEE since 1972 and became an IIT on June 29, 2012.
