GURGAON: With the arrest of nine persons, police said they had busted a gang that allegedly cheated people with offers of jobs in Air India.
The police team that made the arrests from Noida and Ghaziabad on Thursday was acting on a complaint by a Faridabad-based woman, who alleged she was cheated of over Rs 40,000 with job offers.
The accused were identified as Abhay and Ravi, residents of Noida, and Vijay, Himanshu, Nitesh, Rahul, Rajneesh, Khushbu and Riya — all from Ghaziabad.
“We started probing the case when a woman alleged that she was cheated of Rs 41,349 by the gang that promised her a job. When she realised she had been cheated, she filed a complaint at the cyber police station and an FIR was registered under IPC Section 420 (cheating),” said Amit Yashvardhan, DCP (Faridabad).
Referring to the modus operandi, the DCP said the gang members would put up ads on social media. When interested youths would contact them, the accused would pose as officials of Air India and offer them jobs.
“They would also send forged offer letters to their targets. Once the victims accepted them, the gang would demand money on the pretext of offering them training, ID cards and other documents,” DCP Yashvardhan said.
After the Faridabad woman complained, a team was formed to probe the allegations. “Khushboo and Riya were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. The other accused were taken on police remand for five days. The gang was involved in cases in Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The cyber police of these states have been informed,” the DCP said.
One laptop, nine mobile phones, eight SIM cards and Rs 21,000 cash have been recovered from their possession, the police said.
