New Delhi,UPDATED: May 1, 2023 14:03 IST
By Bijay Kumar: A mobile phone was hurled by a BJP worker at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy during a roadshow in poll-bound Karnataka’s Mysuru on Sunday. Police said the phone was thrown in excitement and the BJP worker had no ill intentions.
Sunday’s incident was a reminder of several incidents in the recent past when attempts were made to either come close to the prime minister or breach his security. Notably, PM Modi has the country’s highest security cover and gets Z+ security, the highest level of protection.
The responsibility to protect PM Modi has been given to the Special Protection Group (SPG). The SPG is an agency of the government which has been tasked with the sole responsibility of protecting the Prime Minister of India and, as in the past, his close family members.
Here are a few instances of PM Modi’s security breach:
PM’s roadshow in Mysuru, Karnataka
On April 30, 2023, PM Modi’s security was breached during a roadshow in poll-bound Karnataka’s Mysuru. A mobile phone was thrown towards him. In a video tweeted by a news agency ANI, it could be seen that the mobile phone landed on the bonnet of the specially designed vehicle which was a part of campaigning for the Assembly elections.
It was flung at the vehicle and did not go unnoticed by the Prime Minister, who indicated the object to the SPG sleuths who were accompanying him.
PM’s roadshow in Hubbali, Karnataka
On January 12, there was a major lapse in Prime Minister Modi’s security during a roadshow in Karnataka’s Hubbali where a boy jumped onto the road and managed to reach within arm’s length of the PM.
He was intercepted at the last minute and taken away by the SPG. The boy was carrying a garland and allegedly wanted to felicitate the Prime Minister.

PM’s Rally in Mumbai, Maharashtra
Ahead of a rally in Mumbai on January 19, a man was arrested by the Mumbai Police for entering Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and posing as a soldier, according to an ANI report. The accused was identified as Rameshwar Mishra, a science graduate who was stopped by the Mumbai Crime Branch officials on suspicion around 3 pm.
Banaskantha PM Modi Rally, Gujarat
At PM Modi’s rally in Banaskantha in Gujarat in November 2022, a person was seen removing nut bolts from the stage set up, in a major attempt to breach security. The man was later identified by the police as Sendhabhai Rajgor from Idhata village.
Balloons at PM’s Chopper in Andhra

Ferozpur Security Breach, Punjab
In one of the most significant security breaches that led to a big tug-of-war between the Punjab government and the Centre, the prime minister’s cavalcade was stranded for 15-20 minutes on January 5, 2022.
The way was blocked by protesting farmers who blocked the PM’s convoy when he was on his way to the National Martyrs’ Memorial at the Hussainiwala border with Pakistan.
A major accusation was levelled against the then newly-formed Bhagwant Mann government by the BJP for “leaking information about the route taken by the Prime Minister”.
Last month, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann ordered the initiation of “disciplinary proceedings for major penalty” against former DGP S Chattopadhyaya and two other police officers over the security breach.
