Ex-Amazon employee says he maxed out his credit cards and can’t pay rent, lost his job in October


By Divyanshi Sharma: In the last couple of months, thousands of people across the globe got the unfortunate news of not having a job anymore. Going through something like this is unpleasant, and might even be downright traumatic for some. After all, people spend most of their time in offices and not having somewhere to go suddenly in the morning is a huge change. While some people bounce back from such setbacks pretty quickly, there are others who take some time in coming to terms with reality. And then there are some who change their career paths entirely.

With IT giants like Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Meta and Google announcing mass layoffs, the tech job market, at a global level, is going through an upheaval of sorts. And job-search platform LinkedIn is full of stories of the impacted employees. While some posts were highlighted as soon as they were posted, others took some time. Something similar happened with a former Amazon employee, who had posted about his layoff six months back. Even now, his LinkedIn profile has the green ‘Open to work’ banner and his post is being reshared by people who are trying to help him find a job.

Amazon employee says can’t afford rent

The ex-Amazon employee’s post, that has now resurfaced, talks about his ordeal of not being able to pay rent after losing his job.

In the post, he wrote, “I have maxed out my credit cards and cannot pay my rent next month. So please don’t ignore this post.

“I was affected by the #techlayoffs in October 2022 after accepting a position as a Technical Recruiter II supporting Amazon Prime Video. I have experience sourcing for technical roles ranging from Mid-Senior level as well as 5 years of extensive experience in project and program management.

“I am #opentowork and extremely eager to landing a role as a Program Manager, Project Manager, Project Coordinator, or Onboarding Specialist in a fully remote or hybrid setting in Houston, TX.”

A more recent post by the same ex-Amazon employee, that was published around six days back, says that he is ready to ’embark on a new professional journey and make a career change in the dynamic field of cyber security’.

When Amazon delays freshers’ joining

Amazon announced slashing its workforce yet again in March this year. Around 9,000 people were impacted by the fresh wave of layoffs and majorly, people from AWS, PXT, Advertising, and Twitch teams lost their jobs. The company, however, not only fired employees but also delayed and revoked job offers of some freshers.

In May this year, an international student on F1 visa in the US had opened up about his plight on LinkedIn. He revealed that Amazon had delayed his job offer for the post of Software Development Engineer by six months. However, since the student is on F1 visa, he will need to find employment within 90 days in order to maintain his visa status. Since he will not be able to join Amazon before six months, the job offer is effectively cancelled.

Talking about the same, the student called this whole experience a ‘devastating blow’ and revealed that he had declined several other offers to say yes to Amazon.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in the blog post announcing the second round of layoffs, had called it a ‘difficult decision’. He wrote,“As we’ve just concluded the second phase of our operating plan (“OP2″) this past week, I’m writing to share that we intend to eliminate about 9,000 more positions in the next few weeks-mostly in AWS, PXT, Advertising, and Twitch. This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term.”

Amazon had announced its first round of layoffs in 2022.
