LUCKNOW: The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) introduced last year for admission to undergraduate courses of central universities in the country continues to be a riddle for candidates who are applying this year.
The reason: There is not enough study material available in the market and it’s difficult to figure out what to study based on just last year’s question paper pattern.
Here TOI brings you some tips from the experts that can help in preparation for the test.
Like previous year, the CUET question paper will have three sections. Every question will carry 5 marks and there will be a negative marking, which means one mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
Of the three sections, the first section will have sections I A and IB in which a candidate’s language will be tested through reading comprehension, section 2 will have questions from domain subject testing candidate’s knowledge of the Class XII syllabus and section 3 will be general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning, logical and analytical reasoning and others.
Experts recommend focusing on understanding and comprehending the exam pattern, revising your class XII board exam syllabus and consulting NCERT books.
“CUET is an aptitude test, which also has additional papers on a domain for specific universities for their specific courses. The aptitude test has section 1 on languages and section 3 on reasoning, general knowledge and problem-solving. Section 1 and 3 should be prepared like any other entrance test with fundamental training and practice of speed solving, reading and vocabulary,” said CUET expert Satyam Sahai, an alumnus of DU who has been training students for top entrances tests for the last 20 years
He said that the preparation for section 2 requires revision of domain subjects.
Another CUET expert Nitin Rakesh said, “In the last 40 days, a student must focus on a lot of testing in a time-bound manner. A systematic topic, sectional and full mock from experts will help in building speed and understanding the pattern well.”
He said that for the domain, the board syllabus of class 12 from NCERT books is sufficient. Reading at least 3-4 passages daily for the language section will help in building speed and analytical skills for that section.
Expert guidance should be taken to keep the preparation precise and targeted, he added.
“A UG CUET aspirant should focus on the class XII syllabus. Also, don’t get too excited to attempt all questions,” said associate dean of academic affairs and CUET expert Prof Gaurav Kaithwas.
