By India Today Sports Desk: Mumbai Indians leg spinner Piyush Chawla surpassed Amit Mishra’s tally of 172 wickets during Match 49 of IPL 2023 against Chennai Super Kings to move into third place on the list of all-time wicket-takers in IPL history.

Chawla struck on his first delivery of the match as the veteran leg-spinner outfoxed the dangerous Ruturaj Gaikwad for 30 to break the 46-run opening stand in the 5th over of the innings. Chawla then dismissed the set Ajinkya Rahane for 21 to give Mumbai Indians another wicket as the veteran batter looked to take the game away from the Rohit Sharma-led side at the Chepauk Stadium.
In his 15-year-long IPL career, Chawla has played 175 matches and taken 174 wickets at an average of 26.41 and an economy of 7.85. His best bowling figures are 4/17 in the IPL. Notably, Dwayne Bravo has the most wickets in IPL history, with 183 scalps from 161 matches, with Yuzvendra Chahal close behind on 179 wickets from 141 matches. Earlier, Mumbai Indians managed a below-par 139 for 8 against Chennai Super Kings in an IPL match on Saturday. Skipper Rohit Sharma (0) failed to score for the second game in a row as Nehal Wadhera’s 64 off 51 balls was the only saving grace, while Suryakumar Yadav’s 26 off 22 balls was the second-best score.
For CSK, pacers Deepak Chahar (2/18 in 3 overs), Tushar Deshpande (2/26 in 4 overs) and Matheesha Pathirana (3/15 in 4 overs) were all among wickets.
