Prevalence of food borne diseases: India experiences a significant number of food poisoning cases and food borne diseases. The consumption of unsafe food leads to severe health consequences and contributes to the alarming number of deaths caused by contaminated food and water.
Unsafe food practices: Studies reveal that households in India exhibit a concerning 13.2 per cent prevalence of hazardous food practices. This emphasises the urgent need for public health surveillance, consumer awareness, and robust food safety measures.
To ensure food safety across the country, the following practical implementation strategies can be adopted:
Training and employment: Collaborations between the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and academic institutions can facilitate the design of training programs. These programs should aim to provide employment opportunities for individuals interested in working in the field of food safety.
Street vendor upliftment: Efforts should be made to uplift the street vendor community by improving the quality of their offerings. Providing training programs and assistance in adhering to food safety standards can attract more customers and enhance the overall safety of street food.
