IMD issues ‘red’ alert in parts of Maharashtra

Amid the heavy rains in Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued ‘red’ alert in Palghar and ‘orange’ alert in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts for Saturday.

Reliance Industries Ltd , India’s most valuable company, reported a wider-than-expected drop in first-quarter profit on Friday as its dominant oil-to-chemicals business was hurt by weak refining margins. The Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate said consolidated profit fell to 160.11 billion rupees ($1.95 billion) in the quarter ended June 30 from 179.55 billion rupees a year earlier. Meanwhile, Reliance Retail posts 19% increase in profit. Reliance Retail has registered highest-ever footfall across formats with 555 new stores. Reliance Retail saw footfall of 249 million. Reliance Industries on Friday announced the Q1 numbers. According to company, the net profit fell 11% YoY to Rs 16,011 crore. For Q1, the EBITDA margin stood at 18.3%

Yamuna water level crosses danger mark again

The water level of Yamuna river crossed the danger mark again today in Delhi, rising as high as 205.33 metres, causing more harm to the city and delaying rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected low-lying areas. As per the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) report, the water level might rise to 205.45 metres by 11 pm.

Karnataka priest arrested under sexual abuse of a minor

A church priest was arrested in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district for allegedly abusing a minor at a college in which he was teaching, police said on Friday. According to the Shivamogga police, the accused church priest was caught on the basis of a complaint lodged against him in an alleged case of sexual harassment of a minor in the church-affiliated college where he taught. Rajya Sabha adjourns for the second time in row over Manipur violence

Gyanvapi Case: Varanasi Court allows ASI survey

House of Manipur video accused set ablaze

Women in Manipur attacked the house of the main suspect in a sexual assault case that has enraged the nation, police said on Friday. The person allegedly dragged two tribal women onto the streets in May and later incited a mob to rape and parade them naked, police said on Friday, as ethnic clashes engulfed the state. The sexual assault took place over two months ago but it captured national attention after a short video went viral on social media earlier this week. At least 125 people have been killed and more than 40,000 have fled their homes since the violence erupted. (Reuters)

Italian authorities seize record 5.3 tonne cocaine

The consignment had an estimated value of 850 million euros ($946 million) and five people have been arrested, the Guardia di Finanza said in a statement. Police had been tracking a ship that sailed from South America and swooped in the early hours of Wednesday, when a surveillance aircraft spotted packages being thrown from its deck into the water. Top e-gaming investors such as Tiger Global Management, Peak XV Partners, ChrysCapital, DST Global, Kalaari Capital and Alpha Wave Global have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over 28 per cent GST. “We submit most humbly, that this deleterious impact on the industry is expected to result in loss of over 50,000 high skilled jobs and a further loss of livelihood opportunity for over one million Indian citizens who are indirectly associated with this industry,” the letter added. Chinese hackers breach US ambassador’s emails -WSJ

Beijing-linked hackers accessed the email account of the U.S. ambassador to China in an espionage operation thought to have compromised at least hundreds of thousands of U.S. government emails, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Thursday. Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, was also hacked in the wider spying operation disclosed this month by Microsoft, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the matter. The Supreme Court issued notice to Gujarat government and Purnesh Modi on the plea filed by ex-MP Rahul Gandhi in defamation case on Friday. The Congress leader had filed the plea that sought suspension of his conviction in the criminal defamation case. It was the verdict in this case that led to disqualification of Gandhi as MP. Heavy rainfall in Chamoli

Due to heavy rains in Chamoli district since last night, a part of Gairsain-Karnprayag NH 109 washed away near Kalimati. People going from Gairsain to Karnprayag and Nainital are stranded on both sides of the road. (ANI)
