You will be intrigued to know that this has actually happened where customs agents have seized around 22 snakes of various species and a chameleon from the luggage of a passenger. If reports are to go by, this incident happened at Chennai Airport, where officials found the reptiles inside luggage belonging to a passenger, who had travelled from Kuala Lumpur to India.
India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has released photos and video footage on social media, which showed several large snakes packed into transparent plastic containers, which seemed to have been sealed with duct tape.
Agents added that they discovered the animals while they were searching the traveller’s luggage as she passed through customs at the Chennai Airport.
As regarding the said travellers, the officials only described as a woman, who hauled the chameleon and snakes and chameleon to Chennai from Malaysia in her checked bags, which were eventually seized under India’s Wildlife Protection Act that intends to “provide for the protection of wild animals, birds and plants … with a view to ensuring the ecological and environmental security of the country.”
If reports are to go by, a similar incident also took place in January, when the customs agents intercepted a traveller and found baggage that contained 45 ball pythons, three star tortoises, three marmoset, and eight corn snakes. Reportedly, those reptiles were deported back to Bangkok.
